Using Navio Technologies to Create Hybrid Programming
Putting both broadcast television and Internet content on the TV screen is one thing; integrating them in a meaningful, dynamic way is another. Picture-in-picture technology does not solve the problem, for while it displays the two kinds of content at the same time, they remain separate and unrelated. How can Internet content be included with TV broadcast data, and how can broadcast TV be made to appear on the same page as Internet content?

Inserting the Internet Into TV Signals
Navio technology enables producers creating hybrid programming to insert Internet information in the space "between" television signals. In analog television, this space is known as the vertical blanking region or VBI (for Vertical Blanking Interval) - space currently used to carry closed caption data. In digital TV, MPEG2 data streams offer a similar capacity for inserting Internet data alongside the video information. Navio technology takes advantage of the available VBI or MPEG2 data stream bandwidth, which has very high capacity: up to 96 Kbps-twice as fast as the fastest modems now available for accessing the Internet over standard phone lines.

Internet Insertion through VBI, MPEG2 or DVB

Navio technology supports the simultaneous delivery and display of television broadcast and Internet content through Internet data carried in the vertical blanking interval (VBI) space or MPEG2 or DVB data streams in the broadcast signal. The ability to insert this data allows broadcast programmers to synchronize customized web content with information presented in the broadcast.

Integrating Television into Web Content With HTML-TV
HTML (short for HyperText Markup Language) standardizes the placement of text, graphic images, and sounds on a Web page. Navio's HTML-TV extends this standard language to television data, allowing the Web page to adjust critical aspects of the TV content, including screen size and channel tuning. HTML-TV ensures that TV and Internet data can coexist on the same screen in a seamlessly integrated layout controlled by the content designer.

PopTV Animates Static Web Pages

Navio's PopTV open scripting and animation architecture can be used to make ordinary HTML pages come to life, transforming otherwise static Web resources into vibrant, TV-like content. Through simple scripting, PopTV enables any content provider to choreograph animations and videographic sequences, then insert changing data into the choreographed sequences in real time.
